SELF-GUIDED

Our Plan, Your Adventure

OVERVIEW

We do the work, you do the walk.

Self-guided walks are a way to explore independently and at your own pace, by following a tailor-made, pre-planned route and itinerary using our custom maps and comprehensive route notes for navigation and relevant practical, historical, and cultural information. Unlike guided tours, going self-guided gives you an added measure of flexibility and freedom to choose your own dates, and to decide where and how to spend your time along the trail within the overall framework provided, all while still sharing the expert tips, pragmatic advice, and fascinating insights about the area that you'd get from a guide.

Self-guided is great for some, but not for everyone.

Nagano Adventure's self-guided walks on the Shionomichi (Shio no michi) and in the Japanese Alps can be extremely enjoyable and rewarding in terms of freedom and immersion, but they do come with some unique risks and challenges, and are therefore recommended for seasoned travelers and experienced hikers who are confident, prepared, physically fit, comfortable with navigation and problem solving, and who enjoy the thrill (highs and lows) of exploring independently. We'll cover some of the hazards and obstacles of doing the Salt Road or Japanese Alps self-guided in more detail later on.
